Christmas tree too small? Mini terrariums as green decoration

Easyplant mini Christmas tree terrarium in a glass jar on a marble shelf with warm fairy lights and a dark green wall

If your Christmas tree is smaller than you hoped, or you simply have no space for one, a mini terrarium is a simple way to add festive green to a room. A terrarium or bottle garden is a small, self-contained display that fits on a windowsill, a shelf or the middle of a table, and a version with a tiny Christmas tree turns it into a seasonal centrepiece without needing any floor space.

Why a small tree is not a problem

A big tree is not what makes a room feel like Christmas. The feeling comes from several small touches that work together: warm light, a bit of green, a few textures and a clear focal point. A compact tree, or no tree at all, leaves room to spread those touches around the house instead of putting everything in one corner of the living room.

That is where small glass displays are useful. They create a focal point at eye level, they are easy to move, and they work in places where a normal tree never would: a narrow shelf, a desk, a kitchen counter or the end of a dining table.

Where a mini terrarium works best

Windowsill and shelf

A windowsill is the classic spot. Daylight lights the glass during the day, and in the evening a soft glow behind the jar makes it look inviting from the street as well as from inside. On a shelf, a terrarium combines well with books, candles and a few baubles, and it gives the shelf a green accent that candles and paper decorations cannot.

Dining table and sideboard

On a table, a mini terrarium acts as a low centrepiece that does not block the view across the table. Keep the surrounding decoration simple: a runner, a few pine sprigs and some warm-toned candles are enough. Because the terrarium is already a complete picture, you do not need many extra props.

Desk and small flats

If you work from home, a small festive terrarium on the desk gives you a bit of Christmas without clutter. In small flats it can even take over the role of the tree, with a string of fairy lights draped around it for the evening.

A ready-made option: Easyplant Mini Christmas Tree

One of the simplest ways to do this is the Easyplant Mini Christmas Tree. According to the product description, it is a living green houseplant that you water once, close airtight and then place in your interior. The kit contains an Italian preserving jar with a stainless steel clip closure, a mini Christmas tree in a terracotta pot, 20 warm white LED lights (2 AA batteries are not included), a cleaning cloth, a measuring cup, a user manual and care tips. The finished terrarium is 28 cm tall.

The LED lights are there for atmosphere. They make the jar glow in the evening, but they are decorative only and are not a grow light, so the plant still needs a spot in good daylight.

How a closed jar keeps itself going

A closed terrarium creates a small ecosystem. Water is taken up by the plant and returns to the soil through the cycle inside the glass, and the plant takes in carbon dioxide from the air in the jar. Daylight lets the plant produce oxygen during the day and night. Because the cycle repeats every day, a closed jar needs very little attention once it is set up, which is a real advantage in a busy December.

Styling ideas for a small festive display

Keep the look calm and let the terrarium be the main feature. A few ideas that work well in small spaces:

  • Place the jar on a small tray or board so the surface looks intentional and the glass is easy to move.
  • Add a thin string of warm white fairy lights around the base, not inside the terrarium.
  • Use two or three baubles in one or two colours, such as gold and deep red, or cream and sage green.
  • Add natural materials like pine sprigs, a pinecone or a small terracotta pot beside the jar.
  • Keep the area around the glass uncluttered so the little tree stands out.

Placement and care tips

Choose a bright spot away from radiators and direct hot sun, because sudden heat makes the jar condense heavily and is not good for the plant. Wipe the outside of the glass now and then so the little tree stays easy to see. If you have a closed terrarium, resist the urge to open it often; the idea is that it looks after itself.

If you like the idea but want something bigger, you can combine several small terrariums at different heights, or build a whole group on a tray to create a miniature winter forest. We describe that approach in our article on mini Christmas trees in a terrarium.

Gift potential

A small festive terrarium is also an easy gift. It is compact, it is something that keeps living after the holidays, and it does not take up much space for the person receiving it. You can add a card, a ribbon or a small tag, and the jar itself already looks like a present.

Can I put a mini Christmas terrarium in a dark room?

Choose the brightest spot you have. The LED lights in the kit are decorative and do not replace daylight, so a spot with good natural light is best for the plant.

How often does a closed jar need water?

According to the product description, you water the Easyplant once after you receive it, close it airtight and then enjoy it. Check the care tips in the box for further guidance.

Can I combine a terrarium with other Christmas decoration?

Yes. Keep decorations around the jar rather than inside it, and use a few natural materials and warm lights so the little tree remains the focus.
