Autumn terrariums

Autumn terrariums

An open terrarium changes more in the first few weeks than people expect, the moss thickens and the plants find their own shape as they settle into the new soil. Put a smaller terrarium next to a bigger one rather than one large piece on its own, it gives the eye somewhere to move. Keep the ones with the palest moss on a shelf that gets some daylight, and save the darker, denser ones for a corner that only gets seen up close.

Building one of these is the kind of rainy-day project this season is made for. Open glass, a handful of decoration and a few plants picked for the season, done in an afternoon and good for months.

Why these terrariums stay open

Most of our autumn terrariums are open rather than closed. The decoration inside needs airflow to stay mold-free, so an open top works better than a sealed one, and it means you can just plant and enjoy without waiting for a closed ecosystem to balance itself out.

Watering, barely

Open does not mean thirsty. Water only when the potting soil feels dry to the touch, that is usually all it takes to get these through the colder, wetter weeks. The plants inside are chosen to suit the season, so they hold up well once autumn sets in.

Add a mini pumpkin or a small figure on top of the soil for an instant seasonal look, our autumn collection has both.
