Sinterklaas surprise idea: build your own bottle garden

A bottle garden makes a great Sinterklaas (Dutch tradition) surprise because the gift is also an activity: the recipient assembles a small closed ecosystem in a glass bottle, following a five-step plan that comes with the kit. In the Netherlands and Belgium, a surprise is a handmade or cleverly wrapped gift with a personal touch, traditionally given on 5 December. A DIY terrarium fits that idea well, since the surprise is not only the box but also the afternoon you spend building it.

Why a DIY bottle garden suits a surprise

A good surprise has three ingredients: something to unwrap, something to do and something that lasts. Most gifts deliver one of the three. A bottle garden kit delivers all of them. There is the unwrapping, there is the building, and afterwards there is a living piece of greenery that stays on a shelf or desk.

The kits are delivered as a Do-It-Yourself package. Everything needed to start is included, so nobody has to hunt for soil or plants separately. That makes it easy to prepare a surprise even if you have never built a terrarium yourself.

What is in the Teddy kit

For this idea we use the Teddy bottle garden DIY kit. It is a round bottle made from recycled glass, 25 cm across and 26.5 cm high. The kit contains the following:

  • the Teddy terrarium with a cork, including an LED cork in size L (batteries not included),
  • two terrarium plants: Calathea Lancifolia and Fittonia White Tiger,
  • a terrarium refill and starter package with three fresh green moss balls, 1.75 litres of terrarium soil, 0.75 litres of hydro pellets and 35 grams of activated charcoal,
  • a step-by-step guide and care instructions.

A note on the LED cork: it is purely decorative. It adds a soft glow to the bottle but it is not a grow light and does not replace daylight, so the terrarium belongs in a bright spot without direct sun.

How to turn it into a proper surprise

The Sinterklaas tradition is all about the packaging and the story, so a few small choices make the difference.

Wrap it in a theme

Wrap the box in kraft paper and tie it with a red ribbon, or build a small scene around it, such as a paper garden with moss and twigs hiding the parcel. The recipient discovers the gift in layers, which is exactly what a surprise should feel like.

Add a personal poem

A short rhyme is a classic part of Sinterklaas. Write two or three lines about the person receiving the gift, with a nod to green fingers, patience or the plant they once forgot to water. It does not need to be perfect; a bit of humour does more than neat rhyme.

Build it together

Instead of handing over a finished terrarium, give the kit and set a date to build it together. The five-step plan is easy to follow, so the whole thing takes an afternoon rather than a weekend. Children, parents and colleagues can all take part, which makes it suitable for a family evening or an office Sinterklaas.

How to build the bottle garden

The included guide walks you through the steps, but the logic is simple. A drainage layer goes at the bottom, followed by activated charcoal, the terrarium soil, the plants and finally the moss. You then water lightly and close the bottle with the cork. Because the ecosystem is closed, it largely regulates its own water and humidity. Watering is often needed only once or twice a year.

Once the bottle is planted, place it somewhere bright, out of direct sunlight, and open it for a few hours once a month so fresh air can enter. The care instructions in the kit explain the rest.

Who is this surprise for?

A bottle garden works well for people who like greenery but have little time, for colleagues you do not know very well, and for anyone who already owns everything. It is also a good option when you want a surprise that is not food or another mug. Because the plants live in a closed bottle, it suits desks, bookshelves and windowsills in the living room.

If you are planning a group surprise, you could give every person their own kit and build the bottle gardens at the same table. Sinterklaas surprises are often about being together, and a shared building session gives you that.

Planning ahead for 5 December

Order early enough to leave yourself time to wrap the gift and write the poem. Decide in advance whether you want to hand the kit over as a surprise to open, or whether the building session itself is the surprise. Both work; the second one needs a little more preparation but creates a memory as well as a gift.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bottle garden difficult to build?

No. The kit comes with everything you need and a five-step plan, so you do not need previous experience.

Does the LED cork help the plants grow?

No. The LED cork is purely decorative. Place the terrarium in a bright spot without direct sunlight.

How often does the terrarium need water?

Thanks to the closed ecosystem, watering is often needed only once or twice a year. Opening the bottle for a few hours once a month is recommended.

Can several people build one together?

Yes. One kit makes a nice shared activity, or you can give each person their own kit and build side by side.
