How to prepare your plants before going on holiday
Going on holiday this summer? Before you pack your suitcase, don’t forget about your plants. A little preparation can make a big difference and help your houseplants stay healthy while you’re away. The good news is that most indoor plants can easily cope without daily care for a week or two, as long as they’re set up correctly before you leave.
Give your plants a good watering
A day before your holiday, check the soil of each plant and water those that need it. Avoid giving every plant extra water “just in case,” as overwatering can cause more problems than slightly dry soil. Plants like succulents and cacti should only be watered if their soil is completely dry.
Move plants out of direct sunlight
Strong summer sunshine causes soil to dry out much faster. If possible, move your plants a little further away from south-facing windows or place them in bright, indirect light. This helps reduce water loss while you’re away.
Group your plants together
Keeping plants close to each other creates a slightly more humid environment, which helps slow down moisture loss. This is especially helpful for tropical houseplants.
Remove dead leaves
Before leaving, remove any yellow or dead leaves. Healthy plants are less likely to develop problems while you’re away, and removing old foliage helps prevent mold or pests.
What about terrariums?
Terrariums are one of the easiest plant collections to leave at home during a holiday. Closed terrariums are self-sustaining ecosystems that often require little to no maintenance for weeks. Just make sure they are placed in bright, indirect light and never in direct sunlight, as the glass can heat up quickly. Open terrariums with succulents or cacti may need a light watering before you leave, depending on how dry the soil is.
Consider a watering solution
If you’ll be away for more than two weeks, consider using a self-watering system or asking a friend or neighbour to check on your plants. Make sure they know that not every plant needs watering, especially succulents and cacti.
