An air plant such as this Tillandsia normally grows on other plants, rocks or trees without extracting nutrients from them. They have almost invisible roots and through the small mouths in the leaf they absorb oxygen, water and other nutrients from the environment in which they live. In this case there is a hole at the top of the light bulb through which the air plant can breathe.
